There are always untrodden facets of sound to be explored, and working on something that’s new to me is always exciting. These works have been selected to illustrate the range of production aesthetics and musical styles I’ve worked with and within.
Polka Dot Dot DotSYZYGY
Bicycle Records 2009
Fate Of The Ardent
Simple and beautiful acoustic music. Recorded all live except the electric guitar, and touched up with some small mixing flourishes. Polka Dot Dot Dot are great people to work with and the album turned out beautifully.
The French QuarterDesert Wasn’t Welcome
Off Tempo Records 2011
Goodbye Alligator Skin
I was really excited when asked to record this album. The French Quarter is a 3 piece that has got something special going on, the process and results were fantastic. They said “Neil Young, After The Gold Rush” and this is what we came up with.
AIDS WolfMa vie banale avant-garde
Love Pump United 2011
Please hold the line
Recorded entirely live at Dub Narcotic; the drums through the volume modulated synthesizer vocal setup made for one hell of a drum sound. Plus distorted drum overheads to tape? Yeah, we went there.
Derek JohnsonSelf Titled LP
Aphonia 2011
FKXMS
Solo experimental cello recorded by Derek, mixed by me. We started out with a pair of decent quality home-recorded tracks to work with, but this song really came into itself during the mixing stage. He kept at me to just push it over the edge and this is where it ended up. Derek is a postal worker and this is his tribute to the Christmas season.
Eleanor MurrayOh, Thunder
Bicycle Records 2010
Hush/Smash
Eleanor’s intelligent and captivating songwriting appears here in a full band setting. The feel across the album varies, this track makes more prominent use of mixdown effects than many others. Recorded at Dub Narcotic Studio Spring ’10.
Jeremy JaySlowdance
K Records 2009
In This Lonely Town
A very K Records sounding track. Jeremy played a really strong part in the sound of these recordings. To me, it’s a cool example of how an album can take on a whole different life when working with an artist that really knows what they want.
PalisadesUnderground Houses
Self Released 2006
Like Pornography
A somewhat more “studio” song in that it’s composed primarily of overdubs. I really like the sound of the tripled melody instruments. Recorded basics in a beautiful sounding chapel space, you can really hear it in the drums.
